Mini Trail Guide #53: A tiny hike to a hidden redwood grove
Not much of a secret anymore, but definitely a must-see!
Well, beach tiny hikes and oak woodland tiny hikes tied in the poll from last week! I assured you that I have the very best of the tiny hikes in OC included in the mini trail guides you’ve been receiving via this subscription. Even though this one has grown in popularity and is probably all over hiking groups and websites, it deserves its own trail guide!
And why is NOW the best time to go? It’s less crowded when you visit AFTER all the family photographers are done with the grove (in the fall, this spot is teeming with photo shoots for those holiday cards) and BEFORE it gets hot enough for rattlesnakes (one mom reported to me that rangers told her to watch for baby rattlesnakes in the trees on a spring trip!).
In true holiday fashion — and to remind you a mom & human actually writes these up for you each week — the Saturday delivery of the trail guide this week is due to:
Me being sick due to some sort of laryngitis cold that hit me on my birthday! I have had no voice since Tuesday!
Finally getting an expensive fix to a pretty serious and dangerous problem with our heating system where the carbon monoxide wasn’t vented to the outside of the house for the past 5 years because of a contractor error that wasn’t discovered until a few months ago! Thankfully, we don’t get too cold and rarely turn on our heater. That may have saved us over the years.
Having our washing machine break down for good with a wet load of clothes still locked inside — just two hours after we paid for the heating system.
Learning we don’t get to be with all our grown kids on Christmas because they are sadly fighting Covid.
[It will all be okay! I’m feeling better, thankful to be able to safely turn on our heater if we need it, after racing around yesterday a new washing machine was already delivered today, and we’ll see the kids over New Year’s instead. But, it’s just been a doozy of a week! Our pocketbook started out slim and it’s getting slimmer, but at least everyone is on the road to recovering from our respective viruses.]
Hoping YOU get to squeeze in some tiny hikes over winter break! I have the home page here on Substack all set up so it should be easier to find some of the more recent hikes and access the archive. Only 1 tiny hike trail guide to go for 2024. It’s coming your way next weekend!
Happy Winter Solstice,
Michele
