Mini Trail Guide #30: Take a stream-lined walk in a nature-filled canyon
Saved this favorite tiny hike to share in spring
The hills are still green and the creek is still running this time of year for our tiny hike this week. This scene felt more like the Pacific Northwest than inland Orange County!
I always try to share a little hiking etiquette or tips which aren’t really required for these tiny hikes, but good to know. The information might come in handy for your future hikes? So far, I’ve talked about:
The 10 Hiking Essentials
Rattlesnakes
Creeks in OC
Biodiversity
Staying on the Trail
Developmental & Health Benefits of Play/Outdoors
The story that goes with this hike is about Poison Oak. I’ve written a whole blog post about spotting Poison Oak in the past, in case you want to learn more. There was a thick little patch right in the parking lot. It does grow quite plentifully at this week’s location, but not too close to the trails. I will have more info inside the trail guide.
And also thought you might like this week’s edition of LA Times The Wild newsletter.
“Outdoor time offers a host of benefits for babies. In addition to sensory stimulation, it exposes them to common allergens, which reduces their risk of developing allergies later in life, and it’s actually safer than spending time in crowded indoor places — they’re less likely to catch a virus from another person. Perhaps most importantly, going outside can calm a fussy newborn (and their exhausted parents).”
I would love to hear your stories about the tiny hikes you are trying! Are they working for you? Any special needs I’m not addressing? Or more that I can do to bring value to your subscription?
